Pope Francis was in a giving mood as he passed out 19 red hats to recently selected cardinals. In a message of inspiration Saturday, the pope instructed the new cardinals to place aside rivalries and factions for peace. Also in attendance to watch the ceremony, was former Pope Benedict.
Benedict in the crowd stirred emotional responses from many in attendance who witnessed the gathering of the former religious leader, the current and the potential future candidates in one place. The factions Pope Francis reflected on was something Benedict understood far too well. During the former pope’s reign a series of rivalries escalated between the factions of Curia, which is the central administration of the Vatican. These rivalries escalated into scandals of Benedict’s butler stealing documents and passing them to the media. The scandal became known as “Vatileaks.”
In the new dawn of Pop Francis, hope is the beacon of light that has driven the newest religious leader into the stars. Many around the world has taken an interest in the pope’s words, who delivers more forgiveness and interactivity than many of his predecessors. The pope selected cardinals stemming from several countries that include Germany, Britain, Brazil, South Korea, Chile and Haiti. The passing of the red hats signified 16 of the 19 to become cardinal electors who now join the 106 existing cardinals who are under the age of 80. These individuals are eligible to elect a pope from their own rankings.
While silence is demanded during the ceremony, the audience released a burst of applause when Benedict walked through a side entrance. In respect, Pope Francis removed his white skull cap to acknowledge his predecessor. He then turned to pass the red hats, known as a biretta to the selected 19. As the Pope spoke, he urged the men to become dominant of spirit and service.
He reminded all of the individuals in attendance to remain united, advising it is the “The Church” that needs the “cooperation, and even more” the communion between the Vatican and themselves. The message resonated and many in attendance did not leave with dry eyes. Pope Francis has passed out 19 new hats to cardinal elects, signifying peace and commitment throughout the world.
