Michael Phelps is going to be joining Amanda Bynes in fighting a heap of legal problems as he has been arrested on a DUI charge. Bynes was arrested yesterday, and Phelps was arrested this morning in Baltimore, MD. USA Today reports that Phelps was driving 84 MPH in a 45 MPH area. Police also cited him for speeding.
Phelps, like Bynes, has been in trouble with the law previously. He has received prior DUIs, and he was also photographed at a party smoking from a marijuana pipe. After that incident, he was not allowed to swim for three months, and he lost a sponsorship from the Kellogg company, who stated that his image “was not consistent” with theirs. His prior DUI resulted in his spending 18 months on probation. During this latest incident, Phelps failed a sobriety test administered by police at the scene but was later released by authorities, who reported that Phelps cooperated with their investigation.
Michael Phelps has consistently been an inspiration to athletes everywhere due to his winning 22 Olympic medals (18 gold), making him the most successful Olympian in the history of the games. Amanda Bynes, on the other hand, cannot boast such accomplishments. Bynes was a child actor who has turned into a troubled adult who has experienced a string of run-ins with police.
Phelps has retired from swimming but recently returned to the sport, saying that retirement was too boring. CNN reports that Phelps recently finished second in a swimming competition in Arizona. Many commentators have been speculating that Phelps could make a full return to competitive Olympic swimming, but there is no way to determine whether this latest DUI charge and arrest will affect his comeback.
Michael Phelps joins Amanda Bynes as both of the celebrities were arrested for DUI just one day apart. None of Phelps’ representatives have commented on the incident.
