Michael Phelps Suspended For Six Months Over DUI

Swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, has been suspended from competitive swimming for six months by USA Swimming over a DUI he received Sept. 30, USA Today reports. The suspension means that Phelps will not be able to participate in many pre-Olympic competitions and practices. Phelps has been in trouble with the law in the past and has faced previous swimming suspensions. He says he realizes that he has displayed a “lack in judgement” over the incident and says he was sorry for how he has acted. He also says he is disappointed in himself.

Phelps previously served 18 months of probation for his first DUI. Later, he was caught allegedly smoking marijuana at a party. A photo was taken of him smoking from what appeared to be a bong. USA Swimming says that Phelps has again violated their code of conduct with this latest DUI, and that they want to see him get the help he needs for better “self development.” Phelps’ agency stated that he is “taking steps to address” his actions.

This is a definite setback for Phelps. After his first DUI, he suffered the loss of sponsorship from Kellogs. So far, there has been no word on any additional sponsors who might pull their funding from him over the latest incident. He will receive no funding from USA Swimming during the term of his suspension.

The move by USA swimming means that Phelps will not be allowed to compete with the world championship team in 2015. He will also not be allowed to participate in any events sponsored by USA Swimming during this time. He will still be allowed to train and practice at his normal swim club and is slated to complete a six-week rehab program to deal with his bad decisions. The suspension should not impede his ability to participate in the Olympics, and many fans fully expect him to win more medals at those games.
