Massachusetts Cop Accidentally Runs Over Man Lying on Road, Kills Him

A Chatham, Massachusetts police officer was responding to an emergency call around 4 a.m. Thursday, when his vehicle “ran over an unknown object” on the road. That unknown object was identified as 22-year-old Garrett Gagne. Crowell Road fails to be properly lit, and was dark when the officer ran over the body. It is unknown what speed the officer was traveling or what color clothing Gagne was wearing when the tragic accident happened. An investigation is currently underway to patch up the many holes in this sad story.

The officer, who is currently unidentified, stopped his cruiser to see what he ran over.

Reportedly, he immediately gave medical aid to the young man, as he waited for emergency responders to transport Gagne to the Cape Cod Hospital. Gagne was pronounced dead upon his arrival. Investigators are determining why the young man was lying on the road, and more importantly his condition prior to the accident. The State Police and the District Attorney General’s Office have refused to expand outside a general statement advising they are launching a thorough investigation.

Police did say Gagne was partying with friends as part of a New Year’s Eve celebration in Cape Code, but police have been unable to track any friends associated to Gagne, who is from Longmeadow.

Reportedly, the officer’s name will be released within 24 hours.

The Boston Herald said they called Gagne’s home and spoke to a “family friend” who said Gagne lived such a “great life in such a short timeframe.” Currently, the family has declined speaking to the media regarding their recent and very raw loss.

The stretch of road Gagne was hit is dark, and not even ambient light shines near the road. This tragic accident should force the city’s hand to implement lighting on the street to avoid future tragedies.

The Chatham Police Department sent their condolences to the family, and will focus their attention on their officer regarding the accidental hit. It is unknown at this time if Gagne suffered any injuries prior to being struck by the police cruiser.
