For five years former President Goodluck Jonathan accumulated a host of issues. From corruption accusations, wary security forces and the increased brutality of Boko Haram, Nigeria was ready to make a change. Newly elected President Muhammadu Buhari brings a sense of democratic ruling, and he made one his missions perfectly clear the night of his inauguration.
“The armed forces will be fully charged with prosecuting the fight against Boko Haram,” he vowed fiercely. Buhari said defeat of the terrorist group will not be won until the missing Chibok girls are returned home.
Who is Muhammadu Buhari?
The 72-year-old Nigerian president has fought a harsh battle over the past three elections to win the presidency. He represents the All Progressives Congress (APC), and has gained favor with poverty riddled regions with promises of change.
He has military history in the country, previously he held the military ruler station in the mid-80s. He was known for his stance against corruption and intolerance against human rights abuse. He is known as an honest man in Nigeria with a sharp focus on disciplining the nation. While his ability to manage funds are questioned, citizens believe he is the strongest contender for a firm and brave leadership. They believe the fall of Boko Haram will be closer with Buhari at the helm.
Pledges
Buhari wants to attack more than the Boko Haram. He knows he has taken on a boatload of sore issues from Jonathan. He promised peace between his administration and opponents in Niger Delta. He offered continued investments within their oil rich region, regardless of the militant groups that have stationed in the area.
The incoming president wants to increase oil revenues, one of the countries most profitable aspects, and find a way out of the debt crisis the country currently faces, including reviewing government spending.
The nation is depending on Buhari to inspire them, and bring back the ability to stand on their own two feet. He brings a message of hope and for now, that is what Nigeria needs to hear.
