He was known as the city’s best street performer in Philadelphia. He was heralded to be a star, and was a four chair turner. And yet the life of the talented 28-year-old The Voice contestant came to a tragic end. Anthony Riley loved to perform, he loved to sing and he fell in love with the opportunity to pursue what he loved. But, he was held back by the hand of addiction. Earlier this year Riley told the popular singing show he was battling substance abuse and needed to get back home and into rehab.
Coming from a town to a global stage overwhelmed Riley who previously shared the competition came with extensive hours and “more responsibility” than he could handle.
In March when news surfaced of his departure, Riley did not duck from rumors, he bravely faced them head on. He thanked the show for their strong support, and tried to move on. Sadly, on Friday, Riley was found by a family friend dead in his apartment’s basement from an apparent suicide. The suicide has not been confirmed by officials, but friends and family have confirmed the news.
A public memorial is expected to take place, the family is still finalizing the plans for the funeral.
The Voice released a statement offering their “deepest condolences” to Riley’s friends and family “during this very difficult time.” Those who remember Riley recall his big heart and warmth. He was always kind to those around him, making him a popular staple of not only his city, but also the competition.
Riley’ sister, Halima Miley, told Philly.com no one in the city could go by without acknowledging her brother - “the public loved him,” she said.
