Stitchers: Episode Two (Recap/Review)

As Stitchers moves further into the first season with episode two, things are starting to come together. Although there is still a feeling that the series is rushing, by the end of this segment, Kirsten agrees very quickly to become a more permanent part of the program after being “lied” to. Regardless of this one faulty mechanism in the show, the actors are all getting into character and a lot is revealed before the end credits and the last reveal where we see a guilt ridden Cameron visiting the first stitcher Marta who is apparently in a coma is a good signposting of events to come.

This installment sees Kirsten interrupted from entering Ed’s memory so that she can find out what killed teenager Lisa Keller who overdosed on a new drug at a Rave. During the memory stitch Kirsten learns where the Rave took place and that a young girl named Denise appeared to be the focus of the deceased girl’s attention.

Camille, attempts to apologise to her almost former roommate by cooking lasagna. The gesture is not really accepted but the two women do get a bit closer. Later in the show when Kirsten announces her intention of attending the Rave, Camille invites herself along, much to Linus’ delight. Cameron, Camille, Linus and Kirsten go undercover to find Denise and the funtion’s photographer Raff.

Raff, who is also a drug dealer, takes the girl, a runaway, and makes good his escape. The two couples try to follow only to be stopped by Cleaver, the club bouncer. Camille pulls a taser out of her tight shorts and zaps the hulk into submission. Once outside, Detective Fisher, who cannot get over his obsession with Kirsten threatens to arrest them all until the object of his curiosity reveals her top-secret job.

As the team investigate Keller’s death, Kirsten has flashbacks to Ed looking under her bed for monsters, and later he tells her there is no such thing. Cameron shows his cool “geek” knowledge by using a Galaxy Quest quote, “By Grabthar’s Hammer…” This also serves to show just how much geekiness the show’s writers possess and it is impressive to say the least.

Linus turns out to be a great dancer, impressing Camille, and it is revealed that he takes Zumba. Other revelations include the news that Kirsten’s roommate is actually a member of the secret Stitchers program and was hired to spy on the woman an entire year before being approached by the organization.

The allegations by Camille of cheating and sabotaging her thesis were all the work of the agency who have just recruited Detective Fisher to help the “lab rats” do their field work safely. Sadly, for Kirsten, Ed’s memory deteriorates too far to be stitched and her goal of learning who killed him dies.

This event, Ed’s memories becoming unusable, does make the series tagline a misnomer. “Memories Never Die” says the show’s logo, but in the show these are only really around for 48 hours. Still, “Memories Are Around 48 Hours” does not have the same ring.

So far the show is hitting its stride and Emma Ishta is filling her one-piece catsuit with a stamp of wet authority. Allison Scagllioti is proving that Warehouse 13 was no fluke and that this performer, who makes one think of a young Stephanie Powers is no one trick pony and can impress regardless of what role she takes.

If the series can just slow down and stop rushing Stitchers may just make it to the end of its first season and be approved for a second one. The ending of episode two may have been a bit too pat, except for the introduction of Marta, but the segment was entertaining and Emma, Kyle Harris and co are starting to mesh very well. This ABC Family show looks like a winner.
