The Android 5.1 Lollipop update has finally come to the Motorola Moto X 2014 second generation. The update was originally rolled out to owners of the first Moto X device, with Motorola ensuring all of its older products remain supported with Google’s latest OS offerings.
Thus far, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update has become available for AT&T and T-Mobile customers. While the update will likely appear for customers of other networks, Verizon has still not released its update. However, according to SlashGear, this remains standard practice for Verizon, and an update for its customers is anticipated within the coming weeks.
Motorola officially announced Android 5.1 Lollipop’s release on the Moto X 2013, last week. The update was beamed to device-owners in the United States, Canada and Brazil. However, with the update designed for the unlocked retail version of the device, customers of different carriers may have a short wait ahead of them.
“I am pleased to announce that we have started full deployment of the 5.1 Android Lollipop upgrade for Moto X (1st Gen) for US Retail, Brazil Retail and Rogers in Canada,” stated David Schuster, Motorola’s senior director of software product management.
Much to the joy of Moto X 2 owners, this announcement was shortly followed by another: ” We are excited to announce a new software update for Moto X (2nd gen) by Motorola. This update brings Android 5.1 Lollipop to your phone along with other improvements. Android 5.1 Lollipop improves stability and provides better control over notifications.”
The Android 5.1 Lollipop update brings a host of enhancements, stability fixes and new features. Owners of the Moto X and Moto X 2 devices will be able to take advantage of the operating system’s many improvements, including Smart Lock, a redesign of the app viewing and screen pinning functions, and better multitasking. Adding to this, apps will also launch much faster, and the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi quick settings menu has undergone some slight tweaks.
After performing “soak tests,” the Motorola team identified and fixed a number of outstanding issues. Soak tests are continuing in other regions, also. For the Moto X (2nd Gen), these regions include Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore and Sweden. Meanwhile, on June 17, soak tests for the Moto X (1st Gen) commenced in Australia, Belgium, Hong Kong, Italy, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.
