New Jersey Waitress Pays Bill of Firefighters and They Pay it Hugely Forward

Much too often the negative side of life sprouts and reporting the ill will of humankind and random acts of evil is not only exhausting for the reader, but also the writer. When a story changes that fabric and becomes a notable reason to smile, it has to be shared. Liz Woodward is a waitress at the route 130 Diner in Delran. She was working the late shift when two exhausted firefighters entered the diner to grab a meal after dealing with a gruesome fire in North Brunswick.

That day would change the life for so many people and touch the hearts of millions.

Liz overheard firefighters Tim Young and Paul Hullings discussing their shift and she decided to do something incredible. She paid their bill, and not only that, she included a touching note on the check that thanked the men for their hard work and bravery. Touched by the gesture of surprising kindness, Young snapped a picture of the check and shared it on his Facebook page with a message to those around the area.

Then Young came across information about Liz and realized that covered bill connected to a wonderful, young woman who was trying to help her paralyzed father. Liz and her family’s lives changed five years ago when their father experienced a traumatic medical condition. What started as a severe headache led to the the discovery of a ruptured aneurysm which left Steve Woodward a quadriplegic. Outside of visits to the doctor, Steve remains at home. Liz’s family started a GoFundMe account several months ago in hopes to reach out for assistance on their journey.

She had one wish: the hope the family could afford a handicapped accessible van for her father so he and her mother could leave the home. Any excess would be applied towards the ongoing care of Steve.

On the morning of July 23rd, Young updated his Facebook status to reflect the need of the family.

The family has surpassed their goal for the van and they are utterly thrilled and touched by the firefighters paying it forward to the same young woman who picked up their tab. The Woodward family still have years of medical care ahead, and outside of the van purchase, the funds go a long way to assist the humble family.

This past Sunday, Young and Hullings were able to finally meet Steve. They hugged Liz upon their arrival and met the patriarch of the family. They brought Phillies tickets to Steve and presented them, bringing more tears and gratitude from the family.

Amazing acts of kindness are not far-fetched, it only takes those moments to pause, stop and be grateful for someone else. Paying it forward should be a lesson adopted by all. Liz Woodward, Tim Young and Paul Hullings gave the nation a reason to smile and another reason why caring can lead to the most wonderful responses.
