Gwyneth Paltrow Needs to Stop

Oh Gwyneth. How can you be so talented and yet so dumb? First, you subjected the world to conscious uncoupling, then waxed poetic about steaming your lady bits. You believe that water has feelings and that eating truffles can cause a person to have extrasensory perception. We have grown accustomed to your special brand of insane woo, but now, it has reached a whole new level.

It appears gorgeous Gwynnie has been keeping busy as of late, campaigning in Washington against a bill that would prevent GMO labeling of food, and honestly, she needs to just stop. The lovely lass seems determined to scrape together every bit of wacky pseudoscience that exists in the world, and package it as fact, even though she herself lists credentials that prove she is no expert on the topic of genetically modified edibles. “I’m a home cook and a cookbook author,” she says; it is clear to see she has no scientific background whatsoever.

But according to people who do, there is no evidence that GMOs are harmful. It seems the only real evidence that anti-GMO campaigners ever cite is data showing that pesticide and weed sprays, and not GMO food ingredients, might be dangerous. To date there has been no large meta analysis GMO study proving that any problems stem from genetically modified foods. In fact, humans have been safely eating nature-caused GMO foods for thousands of years, and have been ingesting purposefully genetically modified foods for 21 years. GMOs have been examined for the last 20 years, and there are thousands of studies, including several large meta analyses, supporting their safety.

Gwyneth Paltrow needs to stop inserting herself into debates on subjects about which she has no expertise, and leave real scientists to sort out whether it is safe for humans to ingest GMOs. Celebrities must take responsibility for what they say and do. After all, just look at how much damage Jenny McCarthy has caused with her totally misinformed anti-vaccine rhetoric. Measles outbreaks are happening all over the country thanks to gullible people listening to stupid celeb advice. Similarly, Gwynnie’s ignorant stance on GMOs is the thing that could actually do direct harm to people, especially when it comes to their finances. She constantly pushes people to eat organic food to avoid GMOs, but organic food is incredibly expensive, and extensive scientific research has proven that organic food is no healthier than ordinary food.

Organic food may also carry a higher risk for fecal matter contamination and salmonella poisoning than conventional food. Other studies have shown little difference between organic and non-organic chicken when it comes to “superbug” infestation.

Gwyneth Paltrow means well, and she is a lovely, talented, reportedly sweet woman, but her pushing of fake science on the unsuspecting public must come to an end. She is welcome to go on with her vaginal steaming routine as well as her preference for au-natural grooming in that region, as she so definitively reported to us recently, because it is her personal choice. However, the bacteria modification that happens during such a “cleanse” is much more dangerous than GMOs. Just sayin’.
