Canadian Police Searching for American Family After Baby Released From Locked Safe

Canadian police want to question parents for an incident that occurred Tuesday morning. Staff members received a call from panicked parents at the Howard Johnson Hotel on Victoria Avenue with an urgency to come up to the room. Once staff members arrived, the parents advised their baby was locked in the hotel room safe. The safe measures approximately 20 inches wide x 14 inches tall x 17 inches deep. The hotel staff opened the safe and discovered the crying baby there, the parents took custody of the child and checked out of the hotel immediately.

The hotel staff did not call police until after the parents checked out, it is uncertain why the staff permitted the checkout upon the stunning discovery. Sources share the parents are of Asian descent, and communication barriers stifled the explanation and checkout process. A couple of staff members said the baby was approximately under a year old and curiosity could have led the baby to lock themselves into the safe.

The hotel manager heard the commotion from his employees and demanded they contacted police. Canadian police contacted the U.S. Border and shared the vehicle information, advising Customs not to permit the vehicle to cross back without a welfare check of the child. Border agents advised the vehicle has not yet crossed back to the States. A source for the hotel said the room was booked to a person who used a Brooklyn, New York address. Members of the family had checked into three hotel rooms.

The couple drove away in a 2015 grey passenger Ford van with New Jersey license plates. The plate number is: B31 EUB
