The Institute for Economics and Peace released the the Global Peace Index which lists the most peaceful countries on the planet. The index is based on 23 indicators which determine the levels and absence of violence and fear among a country’s populace and annual history. 81 countries attributed to finding a more peaceful foundation while 78 others faced a decline in peace.
When it comes to regions, Europe dominates as the lead for the most peaceful region while the Middle East and Africa is on the opposite side of the spectrum, falling to the very bottom of the peace index.
The Most Peaceful Country
Maybe not so surprisingly Iceland topped the charts for holding the most peaceful environment. For more than eight years, the slender island has dominated the title due to the security of their nation, and the reduction or lack of conflict with international neighbors. To date, Iceland is one of the rare countries without a standing army, and is known for their social system which supports more than 320,000 citizens for healthcare and educational coverage. The index shows an overall decline in global peace, but Iceland helped the numbers with their consistent stance.
The Least Peaceful Country
Sadly, leading the index in significant conflict and harm against its citizens, is Syria. In 2014, Afghanistan held the dangerous spot, but was overcome by Syria following the growing violence of terrorist group, ISIS and ongoing bloodshed in the civil war. In a devastating, gritty, and ugly portrayal, the I Am Syria website displays the body count continuing in the country. One date listed is August 18 where more than 120 people were killed, 19 civilians joined that count.
The peace index can reviewed here which shows the cost of violence amassed to a stunning $14.3 trillion dollars in 2014. Or check out the YouTube video regarding the peace index numbers.
