The trend of shopping small businesses is supported by one of the largest credit card companies, American Express, since 2010. While Black Friday brings the masses to big box retailers, many small retail businesses battle “rock-bottom deals” from huge corporate counterparts. American Express lit a fuse of curiosity, and more importantly, interest in small, local businesses. For the past five years, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has opened a path of community between business owners, and residents motivated by the company.
Instead of clicking that Amazon link, pause and reflect on the local shops. Cities across the country have various boutiques, gift shops, collectibles and more to enhance the shopping experience.
The face to face aspect is rewarding, and provides a sense of blossomed community ties. A simple Google search can locate small businesses in the area. In Cleveland, there is Keep It Local Cleveland. The website is dedicated to the Pledge $100 drive in support of small businesses.
Unlike large companies, small businesses contend with a smaller marketing budget, and rely on word-to-mouth advertisement to spur sales. Small businesses provide clear advantages over shopping at a big box retailer:
- Small businesses create jobs for the community
- Local goods and services are used to create and run the business
- Economy recirculates, more money stays local
- Diverse choices among small businesses, not just price comparing repeats
- Small business owners have a vested, and emotional interest in their communities
Many local retailers participant in the AMEX program which provides current card holders gift cards for shopping local. Check out their Facebook page for more information. Avoid the crowds, mayhem and possibly becoming a viral, embarrassing video, and opt to shop small.
Happy holidays.
