The summer heat has created dry and blistering conditions for Nagpur and Jamshedpur. The citizens have turned to an annual tradition to reach out to the rain gods for assistance. In a region undergoing high temperatures, it was time to bring together two members of one species to reach out to the gods. Residents shared, the marriage of frogs is potentially a gateway to the gods permitting rain. Nagpur opted for the marriage of the frogs, whereas in Jamshedpur, the residents took an alternate route.
They scarified a goat to plead water from the rain gods. Residents advised in addition, the sacrifice is intended to mark a robust fortune, and farming for citizens.
The amphibians were married in a special ceremony, donned in flowers and streaks of colors. Joined together, and held in loving hands, the frogs were married and reportedly, even shared a kiss to seal their “I do’s.”
The temperatures in the country can rise as high as 117 degrees during the months of May through June. The overwhelming heat is especially crippling to citizens who work in lower paid jobs, under the beating sun.
Frogs have been used in other cultures in years past. Native Indians held various positions of respect for the frog. Many believed the amphibian had the ability to heal, and bring the rain. For some of the tribes, frogs were considered a curse and bad luck. The Kuna tribe considered the frog as a mark of wealth to come.
While many question the use of a frog marriage to stir rain, the tradition continues. The Indian Meteorological Department reported monsoon rains reached the coast just this past Friday. Obviously, there is something to be said for tradition.
