Charles Barkley is focusing on the facts about the Ferguson case and says that everyone should do the same. During an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic, a radio station in Philadelphia, Barkley said he was most interested in the forensic evidence that was revealed by the grand jury investigation and that he does not believe anything he reads in the media. Barkley said that he recently found out about key facts and evidence in the shooting death of Brown this past summer and that he plans on learning more about the case.
Some of the facts Barkley mentioned included the proven struggle that Brown had with police officer Darren Wilson inside the cop car just before Brown was shot for the first time. Two key pieces of evidence prove that such a struggle occurred: Brown’s blood was found on the driver’s side door of the police car and gun powder particulate was found in a wound on Brown’s hand, indicating that he was shot at close range.
Barkley also stated that at least four black eyewitnesses saw Brown charge at Wilson while Wilson was yelling at Brown to stop. There were six witnesses whose testimony supported Wilson’s version of events. Many eyewitnesses saw the struggle in the car before the shooting. Wilson says he was punched in the face and that Brown reached for his gun. Photos of Wilson after the incident show large bruises on his face. Blood splatter analysis revealed during the grand jury investigation was also consistent with Wilson’s story, Barkley said.
Barkley blamed the media for its reporting on the Ferguson case and said that the reason the media “loves” stories about race is because “controversy sells.” He went on to say that the black community has to be “careful” about blaming the cops in certain situations because without the police, black neighborhoods would be like “the Wild, Wild West.” Barkley said that there is a contingent of blacks who try to keep other blacks down and who will say that someone is not “black enough” if they do not wear their pants a certain way or act in a particular manner.
Barkley seemed to indicate that after focusing on the facts of the Ferguson case, he is leaning toward supporting Wilson’s side of the story. He said that the people who are looting and burning down stores and business are “not real black people” and that they are “scumbags.” “There is no excuse,” he said, for the rioting and looting that has occurred. He says he will “take the time as a responsible person” to examine all the facts of the case to determine what happened, and encouraged others to follow suit.
