Black Friday Specials Switching to Thanksgiving Day for Macy’s Walmart

Thanksgiving tidings are fading under the growing commercialism of retail sales. Families typically could spend the day together, before retail relatives headed to work in the wee hours of the morning. Last year, Thanksgiving dinner was cut short as employees were expected to open doors around midnight or even earlier. For 2014, Thanksgiving door busters are basically taking turkey day away for millions of employees who already endure lower than average wages. The Black Friday.com website is touting retail doorbusters for several retailers and many are showing they will open doors at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving evening.

The news was just announced today, and it is not sitting well with employees locally. Speaking to several Walmart employees and a few Macy’s employees showed complete displeasure at the news.

Carrie Hogan from Elyria, Ohio said, “we got the rumors stirring about coming in earlier like last year. They say ‘hey guys we’ll give you time and a half.’ I just want time with my family. We’re already burnt out and they have literally sold out for a few bucks. My resignation will happen first.” Scott Pickens who works for a local Walmart was in agreement with his colleague.

“Once upon a time, retailers fought against pressure in the name of work and family balance. There is no balance. This is do everything for us, and we will do nothing for you. I heard they did this last year, and it needs to stop!”

Macy’s employee Dina Rogers, from Warrensville was displeased, “I am a mom of a marine. He is coming home this holiday and I am supposed to kiss and run to be sure some greedy people get a great deal on a jacket? No thanks. I put in my two weeks the minute we received this notice. These employers are insane. They don’t value good employees, they want donkeys.”

Customers were equally disgusted by the news of the earlier shopping. DeeDee Harpins was headed into Walmart when we spoke to her. She shook her head at the news, and turned the blame back to consumers, “if people stop coming to these doorbusters or whatever nonsense they pull, they would have no choice but to close. So stop appearing to shop and allow these employees to go home!”

What do you think of the earlier times of the former Black Friday?
