Sometimes preparing the “perfect” meal can become costly. Thanksgiving is not a cheap feat, but it can be made more affordable and delicious by using everyday ingredients to create a fantastic meal. When it comes to the turkey, not all families can afford to hit a local butcher to buy that more pricey but stunning turkey, many reach for a store bought turkey. One common complaint? The turkey comes out dry and sometime not exactly the crisp someone wanted. So, how can you make a delicious turkey that is filled with flavor and juiciness? Check out the following recipes for ideas.
Apple Medley
Gala apples, if you can find them, with Fuji apples can make a sweet and delicious turkey. Melt a half cup of butter and chop two large apples into cubes (may need more based on size of turkey). Toss in the butter and mince two cloves of garlic to simmer in the mix. Prepare the turkey by stabbing it a few times in the front, top and under. Place into baking deep pot and lather with either olive oil or garlic-infused olive oil. Rub salt and pepper over the turkey and other seasonings like Italian seasoning.
Once the turkey is lovingly rubbed down, take the butter, garlic and apple mixture and allow to cool for a few minutes before pouring over the turkey. Cut a third apple into slices and place into the turkey opening, even if adding stuffing, include the sliced apples and two more garlic cloves. Cover the turkey and cook, then for the final hour to hour and a half, remove the cover and allow it to cook to crisp.
Latin Delight
If you want an exotic twist on your turkey, this recipe has won winning reviews from my family and friends. Place the turkey into your deep dish baking pot, and once again stab and rub with oil. Pour oil into the pan to allow it to cook in the coming juices. In a measuring cup or bowl add in the following (may be adjusted based on size of turkey):
- 1/2 cup Sofrito Goya
- 2 tablespoons cilantro
- 3 tablespoons Goya Seasoning
- 2 packets of Sazon Goya
- A splash of hot sauce, brand not important.
- 2 tablespoons Achiotina Goya
- 1/4 cup of olive oil
Mix the ingredients, and rub over the turkey all over thoroughly. Massage into the meat and make sure the entire turkey is covered. As mentioned in the previous recipe, cover and cook until the last hour or 90 minutes before, and then uncover to cook to crisp.
